Henry and Mudge and the Tall Tree House

AR Level 2.1 (Tall Tree House); Levels 2.1 to 2.9 (Henry and Mudge Series)

Recommended for: 1st and 2nd grade, anyone who loves big, messy dogs

Themes: Dogs; Boys; Family

We love Henry and Mudge in our house. The stories are simple enough to not frustrate beginning readers, yet engaging enough to encourage them to keep plugging along to the end. The short chapters also allow for logical breaks if this is your reader’s first foray into chapter books.

When Conner was struggling with reading, but too old to read “baby books” he still enjoyed Henry and Mudge (it might help that we have a very Mudge-like dog ourselves – go Max!). On the other end of the spectrum, Emma, at three, can understand the stories and enjoys having the series read to her.

Recommended: This is a great series to work your way through when your child is ready for early chapter books. We read nearly every book in the series (27 books!) one summer, and nevertheless, Connor was disappointed when we finally got to the end.
